HERCULES

Description

Hercules is good and solid - cedar walls and ceiling, exposed oak beams, reclaimed hardwood maple floors, curved roof,
theatrical steps - and more than a nod towards all things quirky.

Think..........wagon, train, barge, tree house - it all sounds a little mad, but all these elements seem to be here, somewhere, somehow. Top it off with about a fifth of an acre of his own private woodland and you start to get the idea....

Hercules  is  our biggest and most recent addition to our characterful and quirky collection. All the luxury accommodation
in one large wagon.

You don't even have to venture outside if you want to 'hole up' or 'chill out' for a while - everything here - all in one place.

All in all, Hercules is perfect for relaxing away from the crowds, ideally located for exploring both Devon and Cornwall -
and it's a little bit different.

Welcome

On arrival the fat woodburner will be laid and ready to light. Toasting fork provided - bring your own teacakes and butter.
First basket of logs free - thereafter £5 per basket - honesty pot in kitchen.
Free tea! - milk in fridge, tea tray set, help yourselves.
Enjoy the complimentary wine and Cornish biscuits on the side.
- and fresh flowers of course - whatever looks good from the garden or hedgerow at the time!

Lounge

Three massive curved steps lead to the half glazed reclaimed front door which opens onto the atmospheric lounge.
Lashings of rich red, green and gold tones embrace you as you enter - you've arrived.
Comforting glass shaded wall lights soften the edges as you unwind. The fat stylish woodburner sits to attention, perched on a slate hearth, enclosed by an old iron wheel band. Large antique wooden chest, convex brass mirror; an air of the 1930's?

The curves of the wagon roof emphasise the 'orient express' feel to the dining area of the wagon  -  you can almost see the
ticket collector approaching from behind the original carriage door!   The reclaimed floor throughout retains the knocks, marks and patina of a former life.   A dinky oak writing desk and large sideboard lean against the walls.   Whichever window you look from, be prepared to meet with trees, grass and a snatch of cornish sky.   A flavour of the circus is apparent thanks to the flowingly decorated beams  -  art nouveau meets Billy Smart methinks.
1940's cinema seats, with the expected flip up action and a little built in table await you for a game of scrabble or romantic evening meal for two.   The lounge window, deliberately set low, takes advantage of the setting sun from the  comfort of your easy chairs.  In the cupboard - torch, lighter playing cards, games, local info, books, etc.

Kitchen

Fully equipped kitchen with full size gas cooker and fridge freezer.   Ample tea towels and cleaning materials all provided.
Everything here that you may need.   An original English Rose kitchen graces the wagon  -  created in the same factory that produced the Spitfires in World War 2.   Soft edged aluminium - reminiscent of the clunk of old car doors  -  solid, reliable  - dragged back from the local recycling centre.   A dismantled heap  -  awaiting transformation.   Lengthy preparation and various attempted methods of stripping and sanding methods later  -  finally colourfully enamelled with a Clarice Cliff inspired
offering.

This could be a good place to mention that the ceiling height in the kitchen/sitting area is only six foot.

High gloss lacquer shines throughout  -  bouncing light and reflections off the walls and floor.   Branches outside throw shadows across the rooms:  hypnotic and relaxing.   The chrome handles and plinths in the kitchen led the way for a silvered theme  -  wall lights, unique old hubcap ceiling lights, and, against the cedar, do look rather cool.

Bedroom

Double cabin style bed [slightly shorter than standard at six foot], with under bed drawers, modern quality sprung mattress,
fitted mahogany wardrobe and tall boy.   Duvet and pillows provided.  Spare blankets.   Hot water bottles for cooler evenings.
Hand painted leafy mural, stylish glass wall lights.

Bathroom

Attractive and light fully tiled modern bathroom comprising;  large ceramic based shower, proper flushing toilet, basin, heated
towel rail.   Soap and loo roll provided.

Please bring your own towels.

Outside

Hercules is embedded in 'Home Wood' - his own patch of mixed woodland - alder, oak, beech, viburnum, ash, sycamore - about one fifth acre. In summer peppered with buttercup and fern. Bounded on one side by native cornish hedging - open farmland beyond. On the lower side, nordman spruce stand tall - shoulder to shoulder.
The natural firepit is scooped out of the earth floor just a few steps away - Ray Mears would be proud! Cook a sausage or savour
a glass of wine or three. When you return from the camel trail at Padstow, grab the hamper and make a picnic before the
sun sets behind the trees. You deserve it.
