MAIDEN ALE WAGON & WISTERIA COTTAGE

A romantic and quirky garden bedroom - Maiden is far from roughing it - feeling exactly like an old fashioned bedroom - but outside in the garden. Teamed with Wisteria Cottage - her own south facing cottage, they happily coexist in grounds of about one sixth of an acre. You don't have to be interested in railways to stay here - more to the point you will appreciate a unique stay in something a little less obvious, but utterly quirky - another tempting experience which in no way compromises home comforts.

Description

Maiden is our 1940's Great Western Railway Ale wagon. Once used to ferry goods back and forth on Britain's railways - helping in her own small way, to keep the wheels of commerce turning.
She has been lovingly sanded, scraped, wire brushed, painted and brought gently into our time, to share with us a taste of history, giving us a close up glimpse of her beautifully solid character and personality.
A subtle pale grey exterior and soft green ironwork help to underline her industrial past. So, if you have time for a few rivets and bolts, and still enjoy a little rust and cast iron - but also appreciate a touch of luxury, Maiden could be the answer.

Lounge

Wisteria Cottage is a veritable sun trap. Half glazed front door (no steps) lead to the light and airy open plan kitchen and lounge. All on one level with large patio doors to the garden. Much reclaimed oak has been used throughout, plus lots of recycling of bricks and hardwood flooring has taken place. A large Godin French woodburner - bottle green enamel and stainless steel - comfy curl up and snooze sofa and chair await. Hamper, local info, torch, lighter, games, playing cards, books, etc. Large table and chairs are used to tea for two and the odd puzzle.

Maiden (garden bedroom)

Complete with original double sized cast iron bedstead - good quality modern sprung matress. Wallpapered and painted inside - blackened hardwood floors. Duvet and pillows provided. Spare blankets. Oak wardrobe with dressing table and mirror. Hot water bottles for cooler evenings.

The world is your oyster - shut the double doors and snuggle under the duvet, or sleep with the windows and doors fully open on a warm sunny evening, dropping off to the sound of the owls. Your patch is completely your own - no-one to bother you
except the rabbits.

Bathroom

In Wisteria Cottage a hand crafted oak plank door leads to the spacious and light modern bathroom with large ceramic based fully tiled shower, basin and flushing loo, electric radiator. Soap and loo roll provided.

Please bring your own towels.

Kitchen

Fully equipped open plan kitchen with full size gas cooker and fridge with freezer compartment. Ample tea towels and various cleaning materials are provided. Everything here - you shouldn't need to bring anything.

Outside

The garden is deliberately open - we were after a wild and woolly effect - a little grass, some slate chippings, bark and
plenty of nordman spruce at the far end. (the pigeons seem to like it in the big conifer at the back of the rockery)
We have sited a camp fire for your pleasure - whether marshmallows on a stick or just a mug of cocoa by firelight. The skies are so clear down this part of the world - no light pollution. Feel free to lay on the grassy mound in the dark with a blanket and wait for a shooting star! Bounded on one side by native hedging and trees, and home to many a critter - rabbits have made these banks their home.
Look overhead for buzzards - our large birds of prey down here - reeling and riding the thermals. Impressive wing span.

Parking

Off our lanes and through the double farm gates - then straight ahead through your own wooden gate - parking is just as you approach the rear of Maiden.
